The little library is a collection of links put together by my inner librarian when I started this Substack. It lives under the ‘Resources’ tab on the website. It’s a selection of other blogs, newsletters, podcasts, mobility aids, clinician sites etc. that have been useful to me in managing life with MS.
I’ve had a fair few new subscribers recently so I’m taking the opportunity to share the library again. Plus there are some updates if you have visited before, including Kathy Reagan Young’s super informative FUMS Six-Pack Newsletter, in depth personal discussions on living with MS from the MS Confidential webcast panel, and celebs with MS on the MeSsy podcast.
I’m thinking about adding an MS or chronic illness memoir book list in future. I recently read the brilliant Head Above Water: Reflections on Illness by Shahd Alshammari, and am eagerly awaiting my just ordered copy of Balls to MS by Andy Reynard. Also excited that Ardra Shepherd of Tripping on Air fame has a memoir Fallosophy coming out next year - available to pre-order. So there are three for starters!
Do let me know in the comments if you have any book suggestions, or please feel free to share other resources that help you.
In the meantime…
Hi Jane, I love these resources! I read a lot of medical memoir / adjacent books and have recently started to make recommendations on my instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/zks_mother.doctor.writer/). A book recommendation about MS would be The Unmapped Mind by Christian Donlan, and an article I found really moving is this by Paraic O'Donnell: https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/paraic-o-donnell-ms-is-meticulously-destroying-me-i-am-being-unmade-1.4168380. Have you read either of these?
Hi Jane, thanks for this! Can I recommend books by Jeffrey N. Gingold, a US MS advocate who had to give up a law career due to the cognitive challenges of his MS. He has written a couple of books on the subject:
- Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis
- Mental Sharpening Stones.
These were recommended to me by Donna Nahal who I follow on instagram. She also does a podcast with Emma Rogan (emmaj_rogan on instagram) where they discuss life with MS called The MS Agency.
